St Andrews Links is the most renowned golfing landscape in the world. At the heart of the Links, is the Old Course but it has five 18 hole courses and a nine hole course alongside it. These are all public courses and with the seventh course, The Castle Course, on a site to the south east of St Andrews, comprise the largest public golf complex in Europe.
The Old Course is unrivalled for its history and prestige, the New and Jubilee offer true links challenges as does the Eden with a slightly lower yardage. The Strathyrum and Balgove are suitable for more relaxed rounds or beginners and families. And The Castle Course offers a new challenge, a Links-like course perched on the cliffs overlooking St Andrews.

Old Course

The Old Course is the Home of Golf where golf was first played 600 years ago. It remains a real test of golf for today\'s champions. The fabled original links course is synonymous with The Open Championship which it has hosted more times than any other venue and will host for a 28th time in 2010. Despite its reputation and status, it is a public course and is one of seven public courses at St Andrews Links.

New Course

The New Course is often regarded as the oldest "new" course in the world. A classic links course with undulating fairways and delightfully challenging greens, it was set out in 1895 by Old Tom Morris. Named the New to differentiate it from the original course at the Links which became the Old Course, the course remains one of the finest examples of Morris' work to be found anywhere. The construction of the New Course was paid for by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which engaged B Hall Blyth, an Edinburgh civil engineer, to plan the New Course, and entrusted the layout to Morris and his right-hand man David Honeyman.

RANKING #65 "The New is a brilliant test of golf which is unfortunately largely overshadowed by its more famous old sister"; "Many locals vastly prefer the New's balance and minimalism to the Old Course's eccentricities"; "Make sure you take care on the closing stages of the 18th as there will be plenty of people watching you from the club house windows."

Jubilee Course Course at St Andrews Links Image
Jubilee Course Course at St Andrews Links Image

Jubilee Course

Qualifying course for the 2004 Amateur Championship. Now well into its second century of life, the Jubilee Course has developed from a basic 12-hole layout into what many consider to be the toughest test of golf at St Andrews. Created on a narrow strip of prime golfing land between the New Course and the sea, the Jubilee was originally intended for ladies and beginners. It was laid out by John Angus junior and made ready in only three months.

Eden Course

The Eden was officially opened on Thursday, July 2, 1914 by Mrs Herkless, the wife of the town provost, who hit the ceremonial first drive. It was the fourth course to be built at St Andrews Links reflecting the growing demand for ply on its sisters, the Old, the New and the Jubilee. Harry S Colt, whose other designs included Hoylake, Pine Valley, Sunningdale and Wentworth, was commissioned to design the course. His layout challenged golfers with severe bunkering, undulating greens and many carries off the tee to reach the fairways. By the year 1913 the pressure for play on the Old, New and Jubilee courses was such that a fourth course was required.

Strathtyrum Course Course at St Andrews Links Image

Strathtyrum Course

Designed by Donald Steel to offer enjoyable golf, the course complements the tougher, championship layouts at the Home of Golf. It is shorter and, with only 15 bunkers, has less hazards facing the golfer. Although few in number, the bunkers are cunningly placed and the moundings around the greens place a considerable emphasis on iron play accuracy. The greens themselves are large and have slopes and borrows which can test even the most confident putters. A great deal of sand has been added to the fairways and greens in recent years to give them a links-like firmness. Green surrounds have been recontoured to create more pin positions.

Designed to be welcoming to beginners and junior golfers the 1520 yard, nine hole course offers a scaled down version of the challenges found on full length golf courses. With shallow bunkers, gently undulating greens and wide fairways the Balgove gives golfers a feel for what they will find on other courses as they develop in the game.
